At Your Command — Neville Goddard | Complete Book

Read Neville Goddard's first book, "At Your Command" in Ukrainian. The basics of manifestation and awareness of one's own "I AM" power.

Neville Goddard Snellgrove Publications, New York, 1939

This book contains the very essence of the Principle of Expression.

If I wanted to, I could expand it into a book of several hundred pages, but such an expansion would defeat the purpose of this publication.

To be effective, orders must be short and to the point. The greatest order ever written is contained in a few simple words: «And God said, “Let there be light.”».

Following this principle, I convey to you, the reader, in these few pages the truth as it has been revealed to me.

— Neville

Can a person change the world with his command?

Can a man give an order and have it carried out? Of course he can! Man has always decreed what has appeared in his world, he decrees what is appearing now, and will continue to do so as long as he is conscious of himself as a man. Nothing has ever appeared in the world of man except what he himself has decreed.

You may deny it, but try as you may, you cannot disprove it, for this process of command is based on an unchanging principle. You do not command things to appear by loud words or loud affirmations. Such vain repetitions are more often confirmation of the opposite.

The order is always given in consciousness. That is, each person realizes himself to be what he has destined himself to be. A mute man, without using words, realizes himself to be mute. Thus, he orders himself to be mute.

The Bible as a Grand Psychological Drama

If you read the Bible in this light, you will realize that it is the greatest scientific book ever written. Instead of viewing the Bible as a historical chronicle of an ancient civilization or a biography of the extraordinary life of Jesus, look at it as a great psychological drama unfolding in the human mind.

Claim it as yours, and you will instantly transform your world from the barren deserts of Egypt to the Promised Land of Canaan.

Everyone will agree that everything was created by God, and without Him nothing came into being that came into being. But where people disagree is who God is. All the churches and clergy of the world argue about the personality and true nature of God.

The Bible proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Moses and the prophets were one hundred percent in agreement about the nature of God. The life and teachings of Jesus are also in complete agreement with the discoveries of the ancient prophets. Moses discovered that God is human awareness of one's existence, when he uttered these incomprehensible words: «I AM sent me to you».

David sang in his psalms: «"Be still and know that I AM God"». Isaiah proclaimed: «I AM the Lord, and there is none else. There is no God besides Me… I form the light and create darkness; I make peace and create evil. I, the Lord, do all these things.».

Your awareness of being is the Door

The awareness of being as God is mentioned hundreds of times in the New Testament. To name just a few: «I AM the shepherd,» «I AM the door,» «I AM the resurrection and the life,» «I AM the way,» «I AM the Alpha and Omega,» «I AM the beginning and the end». And again: «"Who do you think I am?"»

Notice: it does not say, «I, Jesus, am the door» or «Who do you say I, Jesus?» It clearly says: «"I AM the way"». Awareness of being — is the door through which manifestations of life pass into the world of forms.

Consciousness is a reviving force. It resurrects that through which a person is aware of himself. A person always reproduces externally what he is in consciousness. This is the truth that makes a person free, because a person always imprisons himself or frees himself.

“I and My Father Are One”: Revealing the Mystery

If you, the reader, renounce all your former beliefs in a God separate from you and acknowledge your own God as God, awareness of being — as Jesus and the prophets did — you will transform your world through the realization that «I and my Father are one».

Assertion «I and my Father are one, but my Father is greater than I» seems very confusing. But if we interpret it in light of what we have just said about the nature of God, it becomes very revealing.

  • Consciousness (being God) is "Father.".
  • What you perceive yourself as — is the «Son» who bears witness to his «Father.».

It is like a thinker and his thoughts. The thinker is always greater than his concepts, but always remains one with them. For example, before you realize yourself as a human being, you are first simply realize that you are. Then you start to become aware of yourself human. However, you remain the one who is aware of (the Creator) who is greater than his creation — "man.".

Jesus revealed this glorious truth. He never acknowledged a God who was invented by man. He said: «If anyone says to you, “Look here,” or “Look there,” do not believe them, for the kingdom of God is within you.». Heaven is within you. So when it says he «went to his father,» it means he rose in consciousness to a level where he simply was aware of his existence, thus overcoming the limitations of their current self-concept.

Embodiment mechanism: Attracting the desired

In the awareness of being, everything is possible. He said: «"Give the command and it will be fulfilled"». How does it work? By raising your consciousness to the natural feeling that you already are what you desire.

As He put it: «And when I am lifted up, I will draw all men unto myself.». If I rise in consciousness to the naturalness of what I desire, I will attract the manifestation of that desire to myself.

Right now, in this very moment, you are attracting into your world that which you are aware of. Now you understand what it means «You must be born again». If you are unhappy with your current state of life, the only way to change it is to take your attention away from what seems so real to you and rise in consciousness to what you desire to be. You cannot serve two masters. To shift your attention from one state of consciousness to another is to die to one and live for the other.

Question «"Who do you say I am?"» not addressed to a man named Peter by a man named Jesus. This is the eternal question that true being asks itself. In other words: «"Who do you think you are?"» Because your belief about yourself, your opinion of yourself, will determine your expression in life.

True Prayer: Acceptance, Not Pleading

From this perspective, prayer is a recognition of yourself as who you want to be, not a form of asking a non-existent God for what you desire.

Now do you understand why millions of prayers go unanswered? People pray to a God who does not exist. To be in the consciousness of poverty and pray to God for wealth is to receive as a reward what you are in consciousness, that is, poverty.

For prayers to be successful, they must be a declaration of rights to what is desired, not by supplication. So if you want to pray for wealth, turn away from the image of poverty, denying the very evidence of your senses, and take upon yourself the nature of wealth.

We are told: «"But you, when you pray, go into your room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly."». We have already determined that the "Father" and the "Door" are the awareness of being. So, «"close the door"» — means disconnecting from what «I» am aware of myself as now and asserting that «I» am who I wish to be. The moment my statement becomes fixed to the level of unshakable conviction, I begin to attract to myself the evidence for my statement.

Don't ask questions about, AS these things will appear, because no man knows the way. No manifestation knows how the desired thing will appear. Consciousness is the way or the door through which things appear. Signs always follow. They never precede. So first acquire the appropriate consciousness, and then the thing will be forced to appear.

The Story of Mary: The Immaculate Conception of Your Desires

Mary's story is the story of every human being. Mary was not an ordinary woman who miraculously gave birth to someone named Jesus. Mary is the awareness of being that always remains intact, no matter how many desires it gives life to.

Just now, look at yourself as this Virgin Mary, impregnating herself through the agency of desire—becoming one with her desire to the point of bringing it to life.

They say that Mary knew no man, yet she conceived. That is, you have no objective reason (evidence from the outside) to believe that your desire is possible. But, having discovered that your awareness of being is God, you make this awareness your husband and conceive a child (manifestation) from the Lord. Your desire, ideal, or ambition is conception.

Her first order, which is now addressed to you, is as follows: «"Go and don't tell anyone"». That is, do not discuss your ambitions or desires with others, because others will only echo your current fears. Secrecy is the first rule to follow in realizing your desire.

Second rule: «"Glorify the Lord"». As we already know, the Lord is your awareness of being. Therefore, to «glorify the Lord» means to reevaluate and expand your current self-concept to the point where this new appreciation becomes natural. When you achieve this naturalness, you give life to that with which you have merged in consciousness.

Alignment of Consciousness and Desire

The story of creation is given to us in a concise form in the first chapter of the Gospel of John.

«"In the beginning was the Word"». Right now, in this second, that very «beginning» is happening. It is the beginning of an impulse—a desire. The «Word» is a desire that floats in your consciousness and seeks embodiment. The impulse itself has no reality. Only the «I AM» or the awareness of being is the only reality.

To make your wish come true, you need to use the second line: «And the Word was with God». The word, or desire, must be fixed and united with consciousness to give it reality. Awareness becomes the awareness that you are already the desired, thereby giving life to the concept—or resurrecting what was hitherto a dead, unfulfilled desire.

You are aware of being. You are silently saying to yourself, "I AM." If you want to achieve a state of health, before any evidence of health appears in your world, you begin to FEEL healthy. And the very second you achieve the feeling of "I AM healthy," there is an agreement of the two. And this agreement results in the birth of a "child" - in this case, health.

Leaving the old “I” behind”

You cannot put new wine into old wineskins or put a new patch on old clothing. That is, you cannot take any part of the old person with you into the new consciousness. All of your current beliefs, fears, and limitations are burdens that tie you to your current level of consciousness.

To overcome this level, you must leave behind everything that is your current self. To do this, turn your attention away from the problem and focus simply on being. Say to yourself quietly, but with feeling, «I AM.» Don’t fill this awareness with anything concrete yet. Just continue to feel yourself as being until you are lost in this feeling—faceless and formless.

When you achieve this expansion of consciousness, then in this formless depth of yourself, give form to a new concept, FEELING yourself as who you desire to be. In this depth you will discover that all things are divinely possible.

How to change your world

The only way to change your life expression is to change your consciousness. After all, consciousness is a reality that is eternally materializing itself in the things that surround you. A person's world in every detail is a reflection of his consciousness. You cannot change your environment or world by destroying things, just as you cannot change your reflection by breaking a mirror.

Knowing this, begin to overestimate yourself. A person values himself too low. In the Book of Numbers it is written: «There we saw the giants… and we were in our own eyes like grasshoppers; so we were in their eyes.». This does not mean a time in the distant past. Today is that very day, the eternal «now,» when circumstances (e.g., unemployment, enemy armies, debts, problems) have taken on the appearance of giants. It makes you feel like a locust.

But note: you first You were a locust in your own eyes, and only because of that you became a locust to the giants. You can only be to others what you are to yourself. So to revalue yourself and begin to feel like a giant, a center of power, is to transform these former giants into locusts. Awaken to the power that you are, not as a physical person, but as your true Self, the formless awareness, and free yourself from the prison of your own making.

Your consciousness is the Good Shepherd

«I am the good shepherd, and I know my own, and am known by my own… My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.». Awareness is the good shepherd. What I am aware of are the «sheep» that follow me. Your awareness is such a good shepherd that it has never lost any «sheep» (state) that you have been aware of.

Ago «The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.» now emerges in its true light as your consciousness. You will never lack evidence of what you perceive as truth. If that is so, why not realize yourself as magnificent, wealthy, healthy, and endowed with all the qualities you admire?

To be conscious of these qualities is as simple as to be conscious of their opposites, for your present consciousness is not dependent on your world. On the contrary, your world is the way it is because of your present consciousness. It couldn't be simpler, could it? Too simple for human wisdom, which tries to complicate everything.

“I AM”: The Foundation of All Change

Before a person can attempt to transform their world, they must lay the foundation: «I AM the Lord». That is, the consciousness of man is God. Until this is firmly established so that no suggestion from the outside can shake it, man will again and again return to the slavery of his former beliefs.

When you realize this, every aspiration and desire will find expression in your world. «Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.». This "I" knocking at the door is your desire. The door is your consciousness. To open the door is to become one with that which knocks, by FEELING desired. To feel that your desire is impossible is to close the door.

Don't think about it., AS this consciousness will manifest, for no one is wise enough to know the «how.» Wondering and doubting are proof that you have not yet reached the natural state of who you want to become.

The Power of Gratitude: “Thank You, Father”

The proof of this established consciousness is the words: «"Thank you, Father"». When you enter a state of joy and gratitude, and truly feel gratitude for having already received what you desire, which is not yet apparent to the senses, you have certainly merged in consciousness with what you are grateful for. God (your awareness) cannot be laughed at. You always receive what you are. And no person gives thanks for what he has not received.

«Thank you, Father» is not some magical formula that you have to say out loud. As you rise in consciousness to a point where you feel genuine joy, you automatically rejoice and give thanks inwardly. Your faith is now the substance that will give form to your desire.

This rise in consciousness is a spiritual marriage where two agree to become one, and their image is established on earth.

Forgiveness as a path to liberation

To easily enter this new state, a general amnesty is necessary. We are told: «Forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your heavenly Father may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father forgive you.».

This is not some personal God who is pleased or displeased with your actions. Consciousness is God, and if you hold a grudge against someone in your mind, you are binding that negative state to your own world. To forgive someone and release the judgment is to free yourself to be able to rise to whatever level of consciousness you need.

Therefore, a very good practice before meditation is to free all people in the world from guilt. The law is never broken, and each person's idea of himself will be his own reward. Life makes no mistakes and always gives to a person what a person first gives to himself.

The True Meaning of Tithing

Teachers of all stripes have enslaved people to the issue of tithing, convincing them that one-tenth of their income should be given to God (i.e., their organization). But remember, «I AM the Lord». Your awareness of being is the God to whom you give tithes.

When you declare yourself to be something (for example, good or rich), you give that quality to God. And your awareness, which does not consider individuals, will return that quality to you in an overflowing measure. Tithing is necessary, but from now on give it to God alone: endow Him with the qualities that you wish to express, realizing and affirming yourself as great, rich, loving, wise.

The Vine and Branches: Where Your Attention Is, There Life Is

«I am the vine, you are the branches». Consciousness is the vine, and the qualities you are now aware of are the branches you are nourishing. Just as a branch dies if the sap of the vine does not reach it, so too do the things in your world disappear if you take your attention away from them. Your attention is the lifeblood that sustains things in your world.

To solve a problem that seems so real to you right now, all you have to do is turn your attention away from it. Despite its apparent reality, turn your mind away from it. Begin to feel as if the problem is already solved.

For example, if you were imprisoned, you wouldn't need to remind yourself that you wanted freedom. So why look at the prison bars? Take your attention away from the prison bars and start feeling free. FEEL it to the point where it becomes natural - and that very second the prison bars will dissolve. Apply this principle to any problem. I have seen people with hopeless debts get rid of them instantly. I have seen people who were considered incurable by doctors take their attention away from their illness, start feeling healthy - and the illness disappears without a trace.

Faith in the unseen and the rejection of doubt

Consider your desires—every single one of them—as the spoken words of God, and each desire as a promise. Most of us fail because we constantly put conditions on our desires. Simply accept the desire as it comes to you. Give thanks for it as if you already received it, and then go on your way with peace of mind.

Accepting a desire is like throwing a seed into prepared soil. But worrying about HOW the desire will ripen is like holding that seed tightly in your hand instead of throwing it into the soil of trust. Don't worry about the results. They will come as inevitably as day follows night.

The Art of Fishing: Catching Desire in the Depths of Consciousness

Now let me teach you the art of fishing. It is known that the disciples fished all night and caught nothing. Then Jesus appeared and told them to cast their nets again into the same waters. This time the nets were breaking with the catch.

This story is happening in your world right now. Until you realize that Jesus Christ (your awareness) is Lord, you will be fishing in the dark. You will be catching THINGS as if they were real, struggling, trying to influence other people. It is futile.

But when you let your awareness (Jesus) guide the process, you will fish in consciousness. To catch something that is beyond your current capabilities, you must «"set sail into the depths"». Leave all problems aside. Say to yourself simply, "I AM," "I AM," until you feel an expansion, as if you were actually growing. In this deep state you will feel a power you never dreamed of before. Now, in this depth, begin to feel, "I am wealthy," "I am free," "I am strong." Remain in the silence of these beliefs, and soon they will rise again in your world as reality.

Daniel in the Lions' Den: Turn Your Back on the Problem

When Daniel was in the lions' den, he turned his back on them and looked at the light coming from above. The lions were powerless. If you were in the lions' den, you would only think about the lions (your problem). But Daniel turned away. If we, imprisoned in debt or illness, turn our minds away from them and focus on the light (our desire, our God), we too will see the doors of our prison open.

The Widow and the Three Drops of Oil: The Joy of Having

Another story tells of a widow whom the prophet asked, «What do you have in the house?» She replied, «Three drops of oil.» He told her to borrow vessels, close the door behind her, and begin pouring. And she filled all the vessels to the brim with those three drops.

You are that widow. "Widow" symbolizes an empty, barren state. But instead of focusing on the emptiness, the widow turned her attention to what she had— three drops of oil (symbol of joy). The command to «close the door» means to turn off the senses that are screaming about your debts and problems. Feel the joy of already having what you want. When doubts and fears disappear, you too will fill all the empty areas of your life with abundance that will overflow.

The world is at your command!

«I AM the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before Me.» What a glorious revelation: your awareness is now revealed as the Lord God!

Wake up from the dream of imprisonment. Realize that the land belongs to you, «"and all that fills it; the universe, and all who live in it"».

You are so caught up in believing that you are just a human being that you have forgotten the glorious being that you truly are. Now that your memory has been restored, ORDER invisible to appear, and it APPEAR, because all living things are forced to respond to the Voice of God.

Your awareness of being is the World BY YOUR ORDER!
